Born in Japan,  Fumio Tanuma studied fashion design in Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. After a  stint as a fashion designer  at several fashion houses there,  he moved his studio to the United States to proceed to show his own line of style.

KALF, his only boutique,  was first opened its door in 1989 in San Francisco’s Fillmore area. Since then,  he continues to create very sophisticated, elegant clothing  using carefully chosen fine fabrics.
